A football player who is asked to sign an image rights contract in principle transfers to a third party certain of his rights to exploit his image.
What does this mean in normal language? Third parties (clubs, sponsors, national teams,…) cannot use your image (picture, likeness, voice, signature,…) without your prior consent. The exact rights and obligations, of both the player and the party exploiting the image, are described in an image rights agreement.
The image rights agreements are therefore very important as image rights represent a commercial value for the player but can also become very complicated because of the fact that a player will mostly enter into image rights agreements with several parties (club, national team, sponsors,…) and it is important that all agreements are aligned with each other.
