The January transfer window was more quiet than other years. Not only in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League but also in other leagues.
Our CEO, Stijn Francis, was interviewed by the Belgian newspaper “De Standaard”. In this interview the reasons for the quiet transfer window are being analyzed.
The main reasons that are mentioned in the article are the impact of (i) Financial Fair Play and (ii) the football scandal in Belgium.
Financial fair play prevents clubs from spending money they do not have. This is better for the financial situation of the clubs but one of the consequences is that there will be less (permanent) transfers.
Also the Belgian football scandal may have been a factor. Some of the agents that were involved in the scandal were known as club agents and were looking for as many deals as possible during the transfer windows. The football scandal may have reduced the power of these agents.
